13 years of experience working with real customers and businesses, now focused entirely on independent, owner-centered consulting.
Clarity first. Systems second. Tools last.
When we work together, we start with how your business actually works, then decide what needs to change. The tools come after the thinking—not before.
Why Next Concepts

Independent clarity for real-world businesses

There’s no shortage of generic advice and templated playbooks. What most owners don’t have is a clear-thinking, outside perspective that actually understands how small businesses run day-to-day.

Services

Three core ways to work together

We start with a free initial conversation. From there, we choose the right level of depth. Each step builds on the last, and if you upgrade, what you’ve already paid is credited toward the next level.

Start where you are, grow as needed. If you begin with a Clarity Session and later move into an Operations Map & Summary or On-Site Operations Deep Dive, what you’ve already invested is credited toward the next level—rather than paying twice for the same ground.

Who we help

Built for owner–operators and small teams

I primarily work with businesses in the 0–9 employee space—owner–operators and small teams who are close to the work, wearing multiple hats, and trying to keep everything moving without burning out.

1
Owner–operators & small businesses
My skill set is designed to complement owners who are in the middle of it all—selling, managing, hiring, scheduling, and sometimes still doing the work themselves. I help you see the bigger picture so you can make better decisions without losing touch with the details.
2
New businesses & second opinions
Whether you’re just getting your operation off the ground or you’ve been running for years and want a second opinion, I help you shape or refine systems, processes, tools, and operational flow so things feel more intentional and less reactive.
3
Industries I’ve spent the most time in
I’ve worked closely with a wide range of small business owners, especially in:
  • Professional services
  • Construction and roofing
  • Contractor work (painting, drywall, electrical, etc.)
  • Trucking and logistics companies
  • Agriculture and related operations
The thread across all of them: real people, real work, and real consequences when systems don’t support the day-to-day.
Process

A simple path from conversation to clarity

Instead of a complicated funnel, there’s a straightforward flow. We start with a free consultation, then move into the right level of work based on what you actually need.

1
Initial Consultation (Free)
A short call to see where you are, what’s not working, and whether it makes sense to move forward.

We’ll talk about your business, your current challenges, and what “better” would look like. You can ask questions, I’ll share initial observations, and we’ll decide together whether a Clarity Session or a deeper engagement is the right next move.

2
Clarity Session
A 90-minute deep dive into a specific challenge, decision, or system that’s causing friction.

We slow things down long enough to map what’s really happening, identify the core issue, and outline practical options. Many owners start here, get relief and insight, and then decide whether it makes sense to expand into a broader review.

3
Operations Map & Summary
Two sessions and a 2-page written overview you can refer back to or share with your team.

We map how work, information, and decisions move through your operation. Between sessions, I do the behind-the-scenes thinking. You receive a concise written summary that captures what’s really going on and outlines what to focus on first.

4
On-Site Operations Deep Dive
In-person observation and a 5-page detailed report for operations that need a closer look.

I come on-site (primarily Central Arkansas), observe real workflows, talk with your team, and see how systems and tools function in practice. You get a detailed 5-page report with an operational map, key issues, and a sequenced set of recommendations you can actually act on.

You never have to start at the deepest level. If we begin with a Clarity Session and later move into a broader engagement, what you’ve already invested is credited toward the next step instead of paying twice for the same ground.
Potential scenarios

What this work might look like

These are example situations—not statements about past clients—that reflect the kind of problems where this style of consulting can help.

Scenario: Construction crew
Scheduling chaos & scattered communication

A small construction company is managing jobs through text threads, paper notes, and a whiteboard. The owner keeps getting calls about “Who’s supposed to be where?” and spends evenings double-checking everything.

In a situation like this, we might map how information actually moves, identify where details get lost, and design a simpler way to track jobs that fits the size of the team.

Scenario: Professional services
Owner stuck in every decision

A small firm has grown to a handful of employees, but every question still routes through the owner—from pricing to approvals to client communication. Work slows down whenever they’re unavailable.

Here, we might clarify roles, decision points, and hand-offs, so more of the day-to-day can move forward without constantly pulling the owner back into the weeds.

Scenario: Logistics & trucking
Too many tools, not enough clarity

A logistics company has layered on dispatch software, tracking systems, and spreadsheets over time. Everyone is logging into something, but no one feels confident that the full picture matches reality.

In a case like this, we might map the full tool stack, remove redundant steps, and realign systems with the actual flow of work across dispatch, drivers, and customers.

FAQ

Common questions

A few quick answers to things most owners want to know before reaching out.

No. Clarity Sessions, Operations Maps, and Wireless Bill Reviews can all be done remotely. The On-Site Operations Deep Dive is primarily for businesses in Central Arkansas, but travel can be discussed if it makes sense.
It’s a short, focused conversation to understand your situation, goals, and constraints. You can ask questions, I’ll share initial observations, and we’ll decide together whether it makes sense to move into a paid engagement—and at what level.
That’s expected. The structure is designed so that if you upgrade within a reasonable window, what you’ve already invested is credited toward the next level instead of paying twice for the same ground.
Those organizations are excellent for general planning, research, and financing support. I often see my role as complementary: stepping in when you need someone to study how your specific operation actually runs, map the friction points, and help you make grounded decisions based on your real workflows.
My primary role is clarity: helping you see what’s really happening and make better decisions. I can advise on tools and systems, and in some cases help with light implementation, but I’m not trying to become your outsourced IT department.
About

Who I am & how I think

13 years inside real-world operations through the telecom industry

I’m Michael Howell, founder of Next Concepts Consulting. My work centers on helping small business owners see their operations more clearly so they can make better decisions with less guesswork.

From 2012 onward, I worked inside the telecom world, supporting thousands of customers and hundreds of business owners. On paper, the work was about connectivity and wireless plans. In reality, the conversations were about how their businesses actually ran—how work moved, where communication broke down, and why the owner felt like they were always catching up.

Before that, I grew up as the oldest of nine kids in a homeschooled, entrepreneurial household, helping my dad in different parts of his business. That meant learning early how to adapt, pay attention, and operate inside real-world constraints—not theoretical ones.

When we work together, I bring a calm, structured way of looking at your business, shaped by years of sitting across the table from owners who were busy, honest about their challenges, and serious about making things work better.
